As soon as you arrive in France, remember to take out a suitable mobile phone and internet subscription. For greater flexibility, opt for no-commitment plans suited to the length of your stay. You’ll be asked to provide proof of identity, a French address and your bank details. To keep in touch with your loved ones abroad, use free apps or other options provided by your plan.

Choosing the right subscription when you arrive in France

When you arrive in France, you’ll quickly find that a phone and computer are essential. You’ll need a reliable internet connection to help you find your way around, communicate, navigate, complete formalities and stay in touch with your loved ones. Here's what you need to know about choosing the right mobile and internet subscription for your stay.

Which mobile phone plan should you choose?

If you’re staying in France for several weeks or months, we strongly advise that you opt for a no-commitment mobile plan. These plans are more flexible and avoid unnecessary fees if you decide to leave early. Rates start at around €10 a month for plans with unlimited calls, text messages and mobile data. Operators such as Free, Orange, RED by SFR, Sosh and B&You often offer attractive deals

Getting the internet installed at home

To get Internet (including Wi-Fi) installed at your home, you can take out a subscription for an Internet box. Rates usually vary from €20 to €35 per month depending on the technology (ADSL, fibre optic, 4G or 5G box). Most operators also offer telephone + internet bundles.

Check that the term of the contract does not exceed the duration of your stay. Some plans require a 12- or 24-month commitment, with cancellation fees if you leave early. We therefore recommend taking out a no-commitment plan.

Documents required to take out a subscription

To take out a mobile or internet subscription, you will generally be required to provide:

  • A form of identification (passport or residence permit).

  • Your postal address in France.

  • Your bank details (RIB - Relevé d'Identité Bancaire) to set up a direct debit.

International calls

To make calls abroad, use free internet apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, etc.) or check the international call options included with your plan. Some operators offer free calls to certain countries.
