Are you moving to France with your family? Your spouse can come with you on the appropriate visa, and your children aged between 3 and 16 must attend school, with support provided for non-French speakers. Childcare solutions are available for very young children, such as nurseries, micro-nurseries or childminders. The city also offers a range of leisure centres and activities so you can make the most of your free time.

Coming to France with your children

The French school system: everything you need to know

If your children are aged between 3 and 16, they must attend school in France.

You must enrol them in a state or private school recognised by the French government:

  • State schools are free.

  • Your place of residence will determine which school your children will attend.

  • In certain cases, you may be able to apply for an exemption.

  • This restriction on geographical area does not apply to private schools.

The school system comprises several stages:

  • Nursery school: from 3 years old.

  • Primary school: from 6 to 11 years old.

  • Junior high school: from 11 to 15 years old.

  • High school: from 15 to 18 years old.

When you arrive in France, contact your local council (Mairie) to register your child at school.

Non-French speaking children

Children who do not speak French can access special support in a UPE2A (Pedagogical Unit for non-French speaking newly arrived students) class, with extra tutoring in French.

Leisure centres

Outside of school hours (Wednesdays, school holidays), your children can take part in activities at leisure centres.

Children under 3

Children under the age of 3 are too young to go to school, but several childcare solutions are available:

  • Group or family nurseries

  • Micro-nurseries

  • Approved childminders

  • Daycare centres
