Profil enseignant-chercheur Post-doctoral contract

You have been recruited by Sorbonne University for a post-doctoral position and you have signed a conditional employment offer (promesse d’embauche) before arriving in France. Here's what you need to know to get your career with the University off to a good start.

When you arrive 

As soon as you arrive, you will be welcomed by the human resources department of your home faculty.

You will be invited to attend an appointment to :

  • Sign your employment contract.
  • Receive all the necessary explanations concerning the administrative procedures you will need to carry out (registering with the social security authorities, opening a bank account, etc.).   

Your human resources manager will become your key contact. They have probably already been in contact with you to provide you with the documents you need to apply for a visa or residence permit.

Your research unit 

You can speak to the researcher who recruited you to find out more about how your laboratory or research unit is organised, any current projects and your future responsibilities.

Support to get you off to a good start 

An induction and career support scheme has been set up specifically for post-doctoral students. It allows you to:

  • Discover your working environment.
  • Identify useful resources and contacts you may need during your contract.
  • Be supported throughout your stay at the University.

This scheme includes:

  • A morning welcome session and an induction meeting upon arrival.
  • Individual support.

Access to a dedicated professional development programme for post-doctoral students.

Professional development

Sorbonne University offers professional development courses specially designed for University staff, including postdocs. These courses cover a wide range of subjects: pedagogy, project management, scientific communication, etc.

Profil enseignant-chercheur Faculty member contracts

If you have been recruited by Sorbonne University to lecture at one of its faculties, you must sign an employment contract with the academic staff department of your faculty.

Under French law, there are two academic ranks: Maître de Conférence(equivalent to associate professor or lecturer) and Professeur des Universités (equivalent to full professor).

If your work as a researcher requires you to supervise doctoral theses, you must obtain a license to supervise research (HDR).
